A code audit typically reviews architecture and maintainability (would a new engineer be able to onboard reasonably), security practices around authentication and data handling, test coverage on critical paths, and how dependent the codebase is on one person's undocumented knowledge. It's essentially a preview of what investor technical diligence will look for, done on your own terms and timeline.

The output is usually a written report of findings, prioritized by severity, along with recommendations — not a pass/fail grade. Most early-stage codebases have findings; the useful thing an audit gives you is a documented, credible understanding of what they are.

Finding issues yourself, before an investor's diligence team does, means you control how they're presented — as known items with a plan, rather than as surprises discovered independently. Investors are typically far more concerned by undisclosed problems found during their own diligence than by disclosed problems with a credible remediation plan attached.
